What is the Low-Wage Employer Fee?

A bill that levels the playing field

Large corporations that pay low wages to many people benefit disproportionately from employment-related public programs. Because health and child care services increase the supply and stability of the low-wage workforce in Connecticut, companies that employ larger low-wage workforces benefit disproportionately from the existence of these programs.

A Low-Wage Employer Fee would help the state recoup some of the cost of these employment-related programs. It is common sense for the larger, low-wage employers who benefit disproportionately from the existence of these employment-related public programs to offset a portion of the actual costs incurred by the state.

Irregular Work Schedules

Too many large companies are using workers’ low wages and irregular, part-time schedules to drive their profits. And, these companies typically do not provide health insurance coverage or child care benefits to their low-wage employees, or do not give them sufficient hours to qualify for such benefits. This leaves working families living on the brink, forced […]
